What We Do
Our mission is two-fold:
Primary: Military dog foster care for Pennsylvanians. To provide a
no-charge “home away from home”, including free veterinary care provided by the
Animal Hospital of Rye, for the pet dogs of Pennsylvania (any branch, any
permanent duty station, home of record: Pennsylvania) military personnel who
have orders for Horn of Africa, Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring
Freedom. These are pets whose owners have no alternative for their dog’s foster
care and safekeeping and would have to surrender to a shelter or rescue.
Secondary: function as a second-tier foster for geriatric dogs belonging
to Central Pennsylvania shelters and rescues. These are dogs aged ten and older
who are more difficult to place into adoption. They will live comfortably with
us until they find a permanent home. We also care for non-geriatric dogs with
medical, physical or neurological difficulties.
WHY WE DO THIS:
Military
- The dog deserves not to lose its best friend because its owner has been called to serve their country.
- The soldier deserves to know, during deployment, that their best friend is waiting safely for their return.
An older adoptable dog, many times, requires more time to find a permanent home. The kennel space they occupy can be used to adopt out a larger number of younger dogs. We help by freeing that space for the younger dogs while giving the older dogs the comfortable environment more suited to their needs.
HOW WE DO IT
- 200 or 400 sq ft furnished living PODS w/private potty areas and compatible roommates with whom to share them.
- 2500 sq ft play area
- Five acres of walking trails (and lots of humans to take them)
- Heated floors to warm their paws on winter days
- “As close to home as we can make it”
